Summary of the meeting for alumni of Haitian medical schools
Friday, October 13th, 2017: a get together/cocktail party was held at Dr. Ciril’s housein Davie, FL.

Introduction: A welcome speech was given by Dr. Delonnay and Dr. Cruff. They then introduced Dr. Sterman Toussaint for his presentation titled “Access to Care in Haiti”. Dr. Toussaint presented the cases of several patients who had to walk over 10 hours to reach a health care provider in the central department. He summarized the problems that prevent patients from having access to health care. Five important factors are:
1) Geography: Some patients must travel tens of kilometers before to get to a health care provider or hospital.
2) Accessibility: Once at the hospital, it can difficult to receive care
3) Competition with other priorities of the family: Sometimes the family is forced to prioritize other needs.
4) Accessibility to quality and specialties: Often, it is difficult to find quality care and the type of care that the patient requires.
5) Accessibility to skills
The second presentation was by Dr. Jude Renelique, Executive Director of Providence Hospital in Gonaïves. He discussed the structural aspects of the hospital. It was a gift from the Canadian government. It has a capacity of 200 beds. It serves a population of about 4 million. The hospital faces many problems, including:
a) No source of funding for 3 months. And the state is unable to support the hospital financially.b) Energy problemsc) Available but non-functional devices such as digestive endoscopy and radiology equipment that do not workd) The hospital’s monthly revenues range from $ 1.2-1.5 million, while the operating cost is $5-6 million
The third presentation was by Dr. Cruff Renard. He discussed the beginnings of HME in 2010 and the organization’s different activities.
The fourth presentation was done by Dr. Sherley David Gracia. The title of his presentation was “a program for physicians trained abroad.” Dr. Gracia discussed the Masters in Nursing program offered by FIU (Florida International University) as an alternative to Haitian doctors who do not want to/cannot pass the USMLE.
The last topic was the project of the asylum community by Dr. Manouchka Joseph, which aims to help the mothers in the asylum community. It is a project realized by the promotion of Sacred Heart 83-96.
Finally, a workshop was led by Dr. Galit, entitled “Lets make it happen: a step by step tool to bring ideas into the context of Haiti health.” The goal was to identify a problem in the Haitian medical system and suggest how this group can solve it. It was concluded that the HME teleconference program is one of the most effective ways to strengthen the training of physicians in Haiti, and the training of gynecologists in pelvic sonography could improve the quality of obstetric care in Haiti.
On Saturday, October 14, a dinner was held in the evening to close these two days of the symposium.
This meeting between former students of the Haitian Medical Schools was a first. Other annual meetings will be organized in the future to better consolidate the connections between former medical students from Haiti living in the United States and to discuss how they can contribute to the strengthening of the Haitian medical system to meet the needs of the population.

Samedi 14 Octobre : programme de la journée de conférence
L’introduction : les mots de Bienvenue ont été prononcés par les Docteurs DELONNAY ET CRUFF, avant d’introduire le Dr Sterman TOUSSAINT dans sa présentation qui avait pour titre << Accès aux soins en Haïti>>. Dr Toussaint faisait référence à plusieurs patients qui devaient marcher pendant plus de 10 h avant de trouver un centre de santé pour trouver des soins de santé dans le département du centre .Il a résumé les problèmes qui empêchent les malades d’avoir accès aux soins en cinq grands points :
Géographie : les patients doivent parcourir parfois des dizaines de kilomètres avant d’arriver à un centre de sante ou un hôpital.Accessibilité : arrivé à l’hôpital, il est difficile d’avoir accès aux soinsCompétition entre les priorités de la famille : parfois la famille est obligée de prioriser d’autres besoins.Accessibilité à la qualité et à la spécificité . Souvent, il est difficile de trouver des soins de qualité et le type de soin que le malade nécessite.Accessibilité aux compétences
La deuxième présentation a été faite par le Docteur Jude RENELIQUE, le directeur exécutif de l’Hôpital la providence des Gonaïves. Il a fait une présentation structurale de l’hôpital. C’est un don du gouvernement canadien. Il a une capacité de 200 lits. Il desserve une population de 4 millions d’habitants environ. L’hôpital fait face à de nombreux problèmes, entre autres :
Aucune source de financement depuis 3 mois. Et l’Etat est incapable de supporter l’hôpital financièrement.Problème d’énergieDes appareils disponibles mais non fonctionnels, comme l’endoscopie digestive et la radiologie ne fonctionnent pasLes recettes mensuelles de l’hôpital varient entre 2 à 1.5 millions dollars alors que le cout de fonctionnement est de 5 à 6 millions de dollars.
Le troisième conférencier : Dr Renard Cruff
Il a fait une présentation de HME depuis 2010 et des différentes activités réalisées.
La quatrième présentation a été réalisée par le Dr Sherley David GRACIA. Le titre de sa présentation a été << un programme pour les médecins formes à l’étranger>>. Dr GRACIA a présenté le programme de <<master in nursing>> offert par FIU/ Florida international University comme une alternative aux médecins haitiens qui ne veulent pas/ne peuvent pas passer le USMLE.
Le dernier sujet a été le projet de l’asile communale par le Dr Manouchka Joseph, qui vise à aider les mamans de l’asile communal. C’est un projet réalisé par la promotion su sacré cœur 83-96.
Enfin un atelier, animé par le Dr Galit, qui avait pour titre << Lets make it happen : a step by step tool to bring ideas into reality in the context of Haiti health>> a été realisé . L’Objectif a été d’identifier un problème dans le système médical haïtien et proposer comment ce groupe peut le résoudre. On avait conclu que le programme de téléconférence de HME est l’un des moyens les plus efficaces pour renforcer la formation des médecins en Haïti, et la formation des gynécologues en sonographie pelvienne peut améliorer la qualité des soins obstétricaux en Haïti.
Dans la soirée du Samedi 14 Octobre, un dîner a été réalisé pour clôturer ces deux journées du colloque.
Cette rencontre entre les anciens étudiants des facultés de médecine d’Haïti était une première. D’autres rencontres annuelles seront organisées à l’ avenir pour mieux consolider les liens entre les anciens étudiants de médecine d’Haïti vivant aux Etats-Unis et discuter comment il peuvent contribuer au renforcement du système médical haïtien afin de répondre aux besoins de la population.
